Tips & Tricks to Keep Your Appliances Running Smooth

Summer is finally here, and it is in full swing. With temperatures soaring just in time for the holiday weekend, you might be asking yourself; how can I stay cool during a heatwave like this? In this weeks edition of The Pots and The Pans, we're going to give you some tips to keep in mind when utilizing your appliances to stay comfortable during a heatwave!

1. Cook Smarter

As many folks might know, your oven and stovetop can quickly contribute to hot temperatures in your home. On especially warm days:

  • Try to utilize your microwave, air fryer, toaster oven, or slow cooker to reduce heat radiating from your cooking appliances.
  • When possible, grill outdoors to keep the heat outside!
  • Prepare meals in advance, so that they can just be easily warmed up at your convenience.
2. Run Major Appliances at Night

Dishwashers, clothing dryers, and ranges all produce some amount of heat. Try running these appliances at times when outdoor temperatures are lower, like early in the morning or later in the evening. This will help to keep your home cooler, and even reduce strain on your cooling devices.

3. Make Your Refrigerator Work Efficiently

Your refrigerator works harder during warmer weather. To increase efficiency:
  • Minimize the amount of time the door stays open.
  • Let hot leftovers cool before placing them inside.
  • Keep the refrigerator well-stocked (but not overcrowded) to help it maintain a consistent temperature.
4. Help Your Air Conditioner

If you use a window or portable A/C unit make sure you:
  • Clean or replace the filter regularly.
  • Keep curtains or blinds closed during the warmest parts of the day, especially when sun might be shining through.
  • Seal gaps around window units to prevent cool air from escaping your home.
5. Stay Ahead of Appliance Issues

Heatwaves tend to put extra strain on appliances, especially refrigerators and air conditioners. If you notice any unusual noise, inconsistent cooling, or longer run times, be sure to address the issue before it turns into a breakdown.
